How to chill your drink in 2 minutes...Simple Science
A cool science trick which can be used to bring a room temperature soda can to ice cold temperatures in 2 minutes!
Supplies Needed:
Can of your favorite soda
Ice cubes Bowl |
Salt
Tablespoon *optional- thermometer |
Directions:
A little Science...When the salt begins to dissolve it will separate into sodium and chloride ions. Since water ions are polar, each molecule has both a partially charged negative and positive charged end. The negative end of the molecule attracts the positive end of the sodium ion and vice verse. This whole process is known as Solvation and requires energy which is gotten by reducing the thermal energy of the water which in turn, reduces the temperature of the salty ice mixture. Furthermore, not only will the ice melt but it will also get colder.
How does it work...Since the ice water solution is much colder than the room temperature beverage, the heat energy of the liquid in the can will be drawn out and the temperature of the beverage within the can will be reduced.
Second law of thermodynamics states: Two substances with different temperatures reach thermal equilibrium over time.
