How to make your own wrist corsage and boutonniere
How much does a wrist corsage and boutonniere cost? Well, depending on where you are and where you go...a wrist corsage costs approximately $19.95 and the boutonniere costs $6.95. That's quite a bit of money especially if you have several children going to dances or are planning a wedding. Making your own corsages and boutonnieres are quite easy and at less than half the cost as purchasing one. Surprisingly, it isn't even hard to make them. Trust me, this was my very first time making these beautiful floral pieces and I had so many compliments. The first images don't show the color ribbons I used but you will get the idea from the main image.
Materials Needed:
Needle & Thread Ribbon (1 shear, 1 satin) Pre-made bow (sticky back is better) Hot glue gun & glue Scissors |
Mesh material Fake flowers Floral tape Embellishments |
How To Make A Wrist Corsage:
1. Fold a 10x10 piece of mesh in half and then in half again creating a square. Then cut from the one end at a curve to the other, making a curve. When you open it, you will have a circle.

2. Make an upward fist and place the circle of mesh on top of your fist. Then press the mesh into the opening of your fist. Grab a hold of the center of the circle and twist it around causing many ruffles in the mesh. Sew the nub of mesh toward the top of the nub. Then cut the nub off below the sewn area. You can cut around the edge of the circle to make it look even.
3. Next take your ribbon and cut 2 of each satin and shear at about 1/2 longer than the mesh on each side. (I actually used a shear purple ribbon and a gem sewn ribbon) Cut each end at an angle and center them across the top or bottom of the mesh, staggering them satin, shear, satin, shear. Then tack the ribbons in the center and then tack the group of ribbons to the mesh.
4. If you have a sticky back pre-made bow you can now place it on the base of the corsage (the mesh). You could also sew or hot glue it. I actually made mine out of wired ribbon so after I made mine I hot glued it.
5. Cut a piece of the wide ribbon to the length of the girl's wrist or longer if you wish to tie it in a bow. I cut mine to her approximate wrist size and used Velcro on the end. Then center it on the bottom of the base. Tack this in the center and cut each end at an angle.

6. Now you can add the embellishments. I used sticky gems. You can get from the scrap booking section in the store. I placed them along the purple shear ribbon, the bow and on the mesh. Other people use beads, small shimmering snowflakes and etc.
7. For the flowers, I purchased small purple flowers and cut them off the stems, leaving only about an inch stem. Then I applied hot glue to the stem and inserted them into the centers of the bow. Note: Place the flowers where you want then pull them out one by one and glue them so that you know you like the arrangement.
Cut the zipper off a 1 gallon Ziploc baggie. Place the corsage inside the bag with some air and tie some of the ribbon in a bow to store and present.
How To Make A Boutonniere:
1. Using the same flowers, cut the stems about an inch or more long. Arrange a few of the flowers how you like. Then use the floral tape and wrap the stems from the top to the bottom.
2. Next take the shear purple ribbon and, leaving about a 1/2 inch tale, wrap the ribbon around and down the stem as you overlap it.
3. Neatly bring the ribbon back to where you started and tie the two tails at the back. Cut off any extra tail. Then construct a bow out of a piece of the ribbon, and hot glue it to the front of the boutonniere. Cut the tails short and at an angle.
Add a pin and tuck into a baggie as well.
